    Description

This Grade II-listed manor house was originally built as a Wealden hall house before being remodelled for use as a hunting lodge. Today, guests have free rein of both the main house and a sympathetically designed annex. As you’d expect from a property of this pedigree, fascinating features are found at every turn. Stepping into the original hallway, you’ll see a 17th century inglenook fireplace, complete with wood-carved graffiti added by one of his “roundhead” supporters.

The house and its annex offer a choice of six stylish bedrooms, sleeping ten adults and two children. The light and spacious master super-king bedroom has French doors opening onto its own balcony, as well as a private en-suite bathroom. The main house also has two king-size rooms and a twin. The annex offers a further king-size bedroom and a twin. Some rooms have low ceilings and doorways (below 4ft); an age-old quirk that reminds you this is somewhere a little different.

The sitting room’s doors are thought to be repurposed from the long-lost Verdley Castle, but inside there’s everything a modern-day family needs to relax. A comfy sofa and armchair, television, open fireplace and views over the gardens make this a bright and welcoming space.

Within the main house, you’ll also discover a games room with a television, a VR-enabled console, an assortment of board games, and a well-stocked library for laid-back evenings. The annex contains another living space, with the expansive summer room transforming easily into a family cinema room with blackout blinds and a large-screen television.

Made for family feasts and special occasions, the kitchen is a warm hub in which to gather. If you’re cooking, choose from a five-door Aga and two electric ovens, with all the appliances and gadgets you’d expect to find in your own kitchen. And there’s plenty of space to sit, talk and enjoy each other’s company; the long, banqueting-style dining table has room for everyone. A second kitchen in the annex is ideal for rustling up breakfast or morning coffee before heading out for the day.

While the house itself is impressive, equal consideration has been given to Hunters’ outdoor spaces. The grounds extend across two acres, including a private drive, croquet lawn, vegetable garden and wildflower meadow. With wellness in mind, there’s also a grass tennis court, outdoor swimming pool (available from May to September), hot tub, sauna and steam room. And for those sunny days where blissful hours are at your disposal, there’s a terrace with a dining table and chairs, as well as sun beds and an outdoor sofa – perfect for catching up with some reading.

This remarkable property is a real testament to the care and attention taken by its owners. When the house was restored in 2004, the kitchen and master bedroom were added using the same green oak frame that would have been used in the early 14th century. Throughout, you’ll find thoughtfully preserved historic touches and hints of years long past. For centuries a much-loved family home, Hunters is now a dream destination for memorable times to come.
